Eric Garner's family has reached a $5.9 million settlement with New York City to resolve a wrongful death claim after Garner died in chokehold placed by a NYPD officer. The family filed a $75 million dollar lawsuit against New York City and the NYPD last year. The settlement was reached nearly a year after the unarmed 43-year-old was approached by officers who accused him of selling untaxed cigarettes.
New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer stated "Following a judicious review of the claim and facts of this case, my office was able to reach a settlement with the estate of Eric Garner that is in the best interests of all parties,"
Rallies across the United States with the tagline "I Can't Breathe" were heard after video surfaced of the Staten Island resident yelling those same words. Medical examiners ruled the death as a homicide, although a jury delivered a vote of "no true bill" against NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo who's chokehold on Garner was captured on video.
