Los Angeles police are investigating a knife purportedly found some time ago at the former home of O.J. Simpson.

Capt. Andrew Neiman confirmed Friday that the Los Angeles Police Department is in possession of the knife, but also said that police could not confirm whether the knife was actually found on Simpson's property.

Simpson, a former Heisman Trophy winner and star NFL running back, was acquitted of murder charges in the 1994 stabbing deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Neiman said police recovered the knife in the last month from a retired officer, who allegedly received the knife several years ago from a person claiming to be a construction worker who worked on the demolition of Simpson's property.

Neiman released few details about the investigation, stressing that the authenticity of the story is not known.

"Maybe the story is bogus from the get-go," Neiman said Friday during a brief news conference.

Neiman said the knife has been submitted to a lab, where it is being tested for forensics, including DNA and hair samples.

The weapon used in the killings has been a mystery for decades. The killings occurred on June 12, 1994, and led to the "Trial of the Century" in which he was acquitted in October 1995 by a jury that deliberated only four hours.

In 1997, a civil court jury found Simpson liable for the slayings and awarded millions of dollars in damages to families of the victims.

Simpson currently is imprisoned in Nevada for a 2008 kidnapping and armed robbery conviction.
